Remodeling
This den renovation off Trenholm Road in Columbia began as a troubleshooting exercise to discover the reason for smoke coming in around the fireplace mantel. The owner, who likes to burn wood in a "real" fireplace, as I do, had some obvious concern that smoke from the fire would sometimes seep into the room from around the mantelpiece. Our initial proposal was to begin removing sheetrock, and whatever else, to find the source of the intrusion. It was discovered the chimney had been built as a shell rather than as a solid mass, and the flu liner sections were simply
stacked on top of each other, held loosely in place with mortar which had become brittle over time and had fallen out. This little exploratory project continued with the complete demolition and the rebuilding of a new chimney atop a substantial concrete footing. This required new framework and sheetrock finish, and a new mantel and hearth. Hardwood flooring was patched in around the original hearth area and the whole floor was refinished. The bookshelves were rebuilt and a cabinet provided on the right side to support the television and to warehouse other components. The ceilings were of plaster and had cracked and become water stained from a leaking roof. Sheetrock was applied over the plaster and a coffered ceiling applied as well. The customer was thrilled with the new look and function of the room, and especially with proper "draw" of the fireplace. All of this led further to a new kitchen and bathroom renovation.
Additions
Adding space to your home can be easy or hard, based on many considerations. Often the layout of the house will pre-define the layout of the addition, by limiting the variables. These kinds of additions, whether bedroom, bath, patio, etc., may not require much actual space planning.
In the event, however, that your ideas are not so easily executed, we can provide professional help in planning just the right area. Contact
us and let us help you work through the process of gaining that additional space, even if it is only for outdoor living.
